Pocono Drag Lodge Reunion
The Pocono Drag Lodge drag strip closed thirty-seven years ago but once again was filled with race cars and spectators. The first annual Pocono Drag Lodge Reunion took place recently to the delight of those who frequented this popular northeastern Pennsylvania drag strip during 1963-1972.
Fellow competitors renewed acquaintances and checked out worn scrapbooks filled with memories of racing at this Bear Creek, PA facility. Everyone attending was amazed at the turnout of cars and spectators. Attendees were able to view track structures in various states of condition. The scale house, pit side bleachers, concession stand, timing tower, and the drag strip surface evoked a variety of emotions. Oldies music filled the air and made one feel that you were back in the day.
The race cars and a variety of show vehicles stretched from behind the starting line to the shutdown hill past the finish line. A mini cacklefest was held in the area where the Lynwood chassis dragsters were displayed.
A number of Drag Lodge legends were in attendance. Joe Amato was busy autographing posters while Wally Bell, Bob Chipper, Bruce Larson, and track owner Joe Perugino were talking with fans and former racing competitors.
Event organizer Charlie Hulsizer was encouraged by the participation at the inaugural Pocono Drag Lodge Reunion. With the blessing of the track owner a second gathering of cars, stars, and nostalgia fans will be held in 2010.
