February 2013 |
How many times have you sat at a railroad crossing watching the freight or passenger train fly by? How many times have you seen movies or TV shows with old steam engine locomotives? How man times have you been to an uncle or friends house who had a model train layout in the basement? Pretty cool, huh?
Well, their are plenty of model train shows up and down the east coast during 2013 to keep all the legions of train and model train enthusiasts happy.
The particular show I recently attended was at the Baltimore/Timonium Fairgrounds Cow Palace. This is the huge lot north of central Baltimore and just off I-83 from the Baltimore Beltway (695). The fairgrounds not only holds the MD State Fair in late August, but many other events throughout the year, including a nostalgia car show in December and various craft and other showcase events.
At this and the other model train events held here several times a year, all three halls are filled with vendors, displays, and model train layouts. AND, did I mention vendors? Lots, and lots, and lots! Everything from all scale model trains and parts and pictures and structures and so on.
The extensive model train layouts were, for the most part, fascinating and well laid out of which there was, maybe, a dozen. There was even a layout of the Japanese Bullitt trains trains with the miniature models zipping around the layout. Some were huge an intrinsically designed and run by computers. A lot of fun to watch. Unless some of these enthusiasts are used to do this and have it down to a science, it must have taken a lot of time and preparation to get them up and running.
As a diversion to all the racing events we attend and photograph throughout the season, something like this is fund and different to attend and NOT at all expensive.
I will be attending a few more of those model train shows throughout 2013. Try attending one yourself.
